There is nothing like the power of the Kawasaki KLX110 when it comes to motocross. If you plan to ride it on the street, you must make it street legal.

So, can you make a street legal KLX110? 

Yes, it is possible to make a street-legal KLX110. To make it street legal, you will have to install parts like headlights, brake lights, taillights, etc. Other than that, you will need to get a title for the vehicle. This can also be quite difficult depending on the papers you have.

Required Changes for a Street Legal KLX110 

Street legalizing the Kawasaki KLX110 is no easy feat. This is due to the fact that most of the bike’s components need to be changed. These part changes are more or less required for street legalizing other bikes like YZ125. Now let’s see what those parts are and how to make the KLX110 street legal –

Head Light

First of all, to make the KLX110 street legal, it must have DOT-approved headlights. The KLX110 does not have any headlights, so you must install them. 

Street riding requires a headlight with a wide beam pattern and high and low beams. So, you will need a DOT-approved street bike headlight. Here is a video you can watch for installing the headlight on your KLX110-

Brake Light 

If you plan to ride your KLX110 on the streets, it won’t come equipped with brake lights. If you need to ride it on the streets, you must install a street bike brake light. 

The brake light must emit a strong red light that is visible from at least 1000 feet away. You can find instructions for installing the brake light in the previous video.


A horn will also be needed since the KLX110 does not have one. Most states in the US require street bikes to have loud horns. If your horn is not loud enough, your ride could become complicated.

Brake Switch

As many of you know, the KLX110 comes with a brake switch. However, the switch is not up to the standards for street use. You should use the brake switch of a street bike instead. The brake switch that comes with the KLX110 is designed for off-road use and does not meet street regulations.

Tail Lights

The majority of states in the US require street bikes to have two tail lights. The tail lights must emit a red light that can be seen from a long distance. The KLX110 must be equipped with two tail lights in order to be street legal. 

Turn Signals

You must install turn signals on your KLX110 if you want it to be street legal. Turn signals allow you to communicate with other pedestrians, riders, and drivers.

Upgrading the Charging System

The number of lights you will be adding to your KLX110 will overload your built-in electrical system. For that reason, you will need to upgrade your bike’s charging system. 

Components that need to be upgraded include:

  • Stator
  • Rectifier
  • Battery
  • Wiring

Once you have done this, the extra lights installed on your KLX110 will be controlled by your KLX110.


Although your KLX110 tires are designed for off-road use, you can use them on the road as well. But this doesn’t mean that you should. You won’t be able to ride comfortably on the street because the off-road tires wear more frequently.

License Plate Holders

The KLX110 does not come with a license plate. But you will need one if you want to ride it on the street. To do that, you will have to install a license plate holder.

Your KLX110 also lacks mirrors. Without a mirror, you won’t be able to see the drivers behind you. This will greatly increase the risk of an accident. 

A few states require two mirrors, while others require only one. Some states do not consider mirrors a mandatory component. However, it is still a good idea to add one.

The KLX110 does not have a speedometer, which is illegal in some states. You should install a speedometer even if it’s legal in your state to ride without one.

Get a Title

  • Obtain a bill of sale signed by the seller, including transaction details.
  • Visit the DMV or title office in your area.
  • You will need to bring the bill of sale and identification with you.
  • Let the title office review the documents.
  • To transfer the title and pay taxes, you must pay the necessary fees.
  • You will receive a new title in your name from the title office once your request has been processed.
  • A new title will be delivered to you soon.

Is A Making A Street Legal KLX110 Worth It? 

The cost of street legalizing a KLX110 depends on the upgrades you’ve installed. Also, if you hire a mechanic to do it for you, you’ll have to pay additional labor costs. The title will cost a little bit, too.

Conversion kits cost around $200, and you can save $360 on labor costs if you install the upgrades yourself. For the title, it will cost another $30. 

You will have to spend around 500 dollars to legalize your KLX110, which can be a lot of money.

On the other hand, some people opt for selling their dirt bikes and getting a street motorcycle. This can be a cost-effective solution. Don’t get us wrong, dirt bikes are awesome too, especially the Yamaha YZ125, but mostly for off-road purposes.

But if you are really passionate about riding your KLX110 on the streets, street-legalizing it would be worth it.
